Why is psychological child abuse not by many seen as harmful?

August 25, 2024. Lena Hellblom Sjögren, PhD, Licensed Psychologist

A good enough mother or father is cut off from the child´s every day life. At the same time the child has her/his thoughts reformed by the other parent to think that it is the child her-/himself who wishes no contact with the formerly loved – and good enough parent.

Why do not psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, medical doctors, teachers see this as harmful to the child? Those who are knowledgeable call it psychological child abuse.

It is also harmful to many close to the child, making it a public health issue that must be addressed.

No one doubts that a child can be harmed when a loved parent dies. The child is then helped to mourn that parent and to cherish the good memories of that parent.

When a child loses a loved parent who ”dies” by being cut off from the child´s life, the child is encouraged to hate that parent and bury all good memories.
